As I was researching, I came across some interesting statistics regarding cell phone towers. According to the International Telecommunications Union, 95% of the world’s population has access to at least 2G cell coverage. In the United States, there are over 300,000 cell towers and base stations, and this number is only expected to increase with the rise of 5G and millimeter wave towers. While the increased connectivity is beneficial, it’s also natural to wonder if there are any potential dangers associated with cell phone towers.

Well, I’ve heard that some people are worried about the health risks associated with cell towers, and I can understand why. I decided to do some research, and according to the American Cancer Society, they acknowledge these concerns on their website.

As for me, I don’t believe that there’s enough proof to suggest that being exposed to RF waves from cell phone towers can bring about significant health consequences. Nonetheless, I also acknowledge that this doesn’t imply that the RF waves are entirely secure. In fact, many experts believe that further studies should be conducted to properly illuminate this subject, especially concerning any potential long-term hazards.

With that in mind, I find myself concerned. I have no idea what the long-term health effects of exposure are, and yet I feel like I am constantly being exposed. I am, in a sense, a test subject.

I believe that there is still a lot that we don’t understand about cell towers. However, there are some things that we do know. As an advocate for knowledge, I invite you to explore the cell tower information available on this site.

How Cell Towers Work

To better comprehend the possible hazards of cell phone towers, it’s important to understand their functioning. Whenever I make a call from my cell phone, it emits radiofrequency waves that travel to the nearest cell tower. The tower then receives these waves, and forwards them to an exchange, which acts like a switchboard operator. This exchange then connects my call, and sends the waves back to the cell tower, and finally to my phone.

Cell Tower Radiation

When cell towers send a signal to my phone or to an exchange, they create electromagnetic radiofrequency waves. These waves are also known as RF-EMF radiation, and they fall on the non-ionizing side of the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike X-rays and other forms of ionizing radiation, RF-EMF and other non-ionizing forms of radiation lack the energy required to split an atom. As a result, they are not as heavily regulated.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sets safe levels of RF exposure in the United States, with a maximum exposure level of 580 microwatts per square centimeter for cell towers. The FCC suggests that this level is unlikely to be experienced by the average individual, as it would require standing a few feet away from the cell tower for several minutes. However, the organization does acknowledge that rooftop towers can be problematic for maintenance workers or others who may spend an extended period of time on the roof with the tower. In this case, the FCC recommends limiting the amount of time spent in close proximity to the tower. It is worth noting that the FCC set these recommendations in 1996, and they are well over two decades old. Since then, new research on RF radiation has become available, and it’s essential to take it into consideration.

Cell Phone Tower Health Studies

Let me tell you about some studies that have been conducted on the effects of cell tower radiation. In a study published in 2004, researchers divided the population of Netanya, Israel, into groups based on their proximity to a local cell tower. They found that females living in close range to the cell tower had a 10.5% relative cancer rate, while those living outside of the affected area had a .6% cancer rate. The entire population of Netanya had a cancer rate of 1%. The researchers concluded that living in close proximity to a cell tower increased the risk of developing cancer.

Health Studies

Another study published in Experimental Oncology in 2011 reviewed data on low-intensity microwaves, such as those produced by cell towers, and their potential to induce cancer in humans and animals. The researchers found that cancer was most likely in those who were regularly exposed for periods of at least ten years, but even those living near a tower for just one year experienced an increased risk of developing cancer. The researchers stressed the need to re-assess current government regulations based on newer data.

In a 2003 study from the Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine journal, researchers surveyed a group of 530 individuals and asked them about their symptoms and proximity to a cell tower. They found that Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) symptoms such as nausea and hallucinations were most common amongst those living up to 10 meters away from a tower. Those living 100 meters away were more likely to experience depression and irritability, while those living 200 to 300 meters away experienced fatigue.

Finally, a study published in the Journal of Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine in 2013 found that exposure to radiofrequency waves generated by a model antenna caused oxidative stress in rats, as evidenced by a decrease in antioxidant enzymes and an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA). Oxidative stress has been shown to have negative reproductive effects.

One of the risks of prolonged exposure to cell phone towers that concerns me the most is the increased likelihood of cancer. This risk is especially worrying when it comes to children and babies, whose skulls are thinner and more vulnerable to radiation exposure. In addition to cancer, prolonged exposure to cell tower radiation can lead to other serious health problems, such as male infertility, miscarriages in pregnant women, and neurological conditions. It can also disrupt sleep and metabolism, making it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Individuals who suffer from Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) are at an even greater disadvantage due to the abundance of cell towers in our environment. People with EHS are highly sensitive to electromagnetic fields, which can cause a range of symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, insomnia, irritability, itchiness, and heart palpitations. It’s important to note that the severity of these symptoms may vary depending on how close you are to the electromagnetic source.

All of these risks associated with cell phone towers highlight the importance of taking steps to protect ourselves from excessive radiation exposure. By keeping a safe distance from cell phone towers and taking advantage of shielding materials, we can reduce our risk of developing these serious health problems. It’s also important to be aware of the potential dangers and advocate for safer cell phone tower practices in our communities. With a little bit of knowledge and effort, we can take steps to protect our health and well-being in the face of the dangers posed by cell phone towers.

What About 5G?

In this section, I’ll briefly cover the basics of how 5G works, although for more detailed information, you can check out 5G Technology Explained. There are three types of towers that transmit different 5G signals. Low-band and mid-band towers have similar signal ranges and strengths to 4G towers. While they require more towers to be installed, these towers will eventually replace their 4G counterparts and likely carry similar risks. However, things get more concerning when we talk about high-band 5G towers, also known as millimeter wave towers. These towers require a line of sight to work effectively, which means that many towers are needed in urban neighborhoods with many obstructions to cover the area in a signal. As a result, cities have high-band 5G towers mounted on streetlight poles, rooftops, and sporting arenas – all areas where people may spend extended periods of time. However, high-band broadcasts at a different frequency than other forms of 5G or 4G, ranging from 24 to 39GHz, a spectrum that is still subject to the FCC’s 1996 regulations but has been studied even less. We can’t definitively say that 5G towers have negative health effects. Still, we also can’t say that they don’t have negative health effects, and that’s where the problem lies. We don’t know for sure, and yet we are adopting the technology as quickly as we can.

Final Thoughts

I know that I’m not alone in my concerns about the dangers of cell phone towers. That’s why one of the first steps I take in protecting myself is identifying how close I am to any nearby towers. By knowing my proximity to these towers, I can better understand my potential exposure to radiation and take appropriate measures to reduce my risk.

Fortunately, there are resources available to help locate nearby cell phone towers. For 4G towers, I can turn to Locating Cell Towers Near Me for assistance.
