As someone who cares deeply about my health, I know how important it is to find a low EMF phone. Cell phone radiation has been linked to serious health issues like glioma and male infertility, so it’s worth taking the time to find a phone that emits less radiation.

But if you’re in the market for a new phone, it’s a good idea to choose one with a lower EMF rating. Below, I’ve compiled a list of some of the best low EMF phones on the market.

How Is Cell Phone Radiation Measured?

Before I share some low EMF phone models, let me explain how we determine which phones emit less radiation. In our guide to Cell Phones and SAR, we go into more detail, but essentially, Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) is the measurement used to regulate cell phone radiation. SAR measures the amount of radiation absorbed by living tissue.

In the US, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sets a limit of 1.6W/kg for a phone’s SAR output. While SAR has some flaws, as we discuss in the guide mentioned earlier, it does provide a baseline for comparing radiation levels of different phones. However, some phones emit much less radiation than the FCC limit. And those are the phones we’ll be looking at today.

The phone also boasts a long-lasting battery and a massive 6.8-inch bezel-less display. The camera is crystal clear and equipped with studio-grade lenses, and the phone has gesture-based commands. The main drawback is the lack of a headphone jack, but if you’re willing to overlook that, the Note 10+ is a sleek and responsive phone that won’t expose you to high levels of EMF.

Testing Your Phone’s Levels

You probably aren’t going to be able to replicate the SAR tests performed by cell phone companies and laboratories. However, you can still get a good idea of exactly how much radiation your phone produces using an EMF meter. If you don’t own one already, I recommend starting with the TriField TF2, which measures RF radiation in addition to electric and magnetic fields, making it ideal for measuring cell phone radiation. To measure the radiation coming from your cell phone, turn the meter on and hold it next to your phone. To get a baseline measurement, you can first take your measurement with the phone powered off. That will tell you how much environmental radiation is affecting your reading. Once you know that, turn your phone on and watch as the number on your meter changes.

You can take measurements in various states, including during an active call, in airplane mode, with a Bluetooth device connected, and with WiFi on and off. All of these readings give you some idea of how much radiation your phone produces during those different activities. Experiment with different distances between the meter and the phone and take note of how the levels decrease as you increase the distance between them. Radiation levels are typically higher closer to the source.

This experiment can help you determine the precise amount of radiation your phone emits and the safe distance required for operating the device.

Cell phone radiation is something we can’t avoid entirely, but we can definitely lower our exposure by opting for a phone with a lower EMF.
