After setting aside the manual and top piece of foam, the meter came into view. The display screen is a decent size, and the device appears to be operated using a turn dial. The TF2 runs on a single 9-volt battery, which was provided and enclosed in its own slot in the protective foam. The box contains just three items: the meter, a 9-volt battery, and an instruction booklet.

I can use this to improve visibility in poor lighting conditions. The bottom button, next to an audio symbol, controls the audio indicator of the unit, allowing me to turn the sound on or off. To install the battery, I must match the positive post of the battery with the corresponding positive terminal on the device. I can easily tell which side is positive because there is a small plus sign next to the positive post. The negative side is unlabeled.

Once I have determined the proper direction to insert the battery, I can slide it into its slot and lock the battery cover back into place.

The options are standard magnetic, standard electric, weighted magnetic, weighted electric, and RF. The one I choose depends on the type of reading I need to take, and it’s important to have a good understanding of what each function measures before proceeding.

For example, the standard magnetic measurement detects AC magnetic fields between 40 Hz and 100 kHz, with a range of magnetic field strengths between .1 and 100 mG. On the other hand, the standard electric measurement detects AC electric fields between 40 Hz and 100 kHz, with a range of field strengths between 1 and 1000 volts per meter.

The weighted magnetic and weighted electric functions also detect AC fields in the same frequency range, but with a weighted measurement that takes into account the amount of energy living tissue is exposed to from EMF radiation. This is especially useful when measuring radiation coming from living tissue like the human body.

The final option, RF, is for measuring radiofrequency. In this mode, the meter can measure frequencies ranging from 20 MHz to 6 GHz with strengths between .001 and 19.999 mW/m2. This is suitable for detecting a range of signals, including 4G cell phone towers, WiFi, Bluetooth, and mid and low-band 5G signals. However, the meter may not detect high-band (millimeter wave) 5G signals, as they fall outside of its frequency range.

To adjust the display on my Trifield EMF meter, I can use the top button located underneath the battery cover. If I need to make the screen brighter or dimmer, I can slide off the battery cover and press the top button next to the sun icon. This will turn on the meter’s backlight feature. If I want to turn off the backlight, I can simply press the button again.

Adjusting the audio

To adjust the audio on the Trifield EMF meter, I need to use the bottom button located underneath the battery cover. To access it, I have to remove the battery cover in the same way as adjusting the display. Pressing the button once will turn on the audio indicator, while pressing it again will turn off the audio. Unfortunately, there is no way to adjust the volume of the sound. The only options are to turn the sound on or off.

Taking a measurement and deciphering the display with the TF2 is an easy process. Once I have selected my desired reading type by turning the dial, the meter will automatically take measurements in real-time. This real-time feature is useful as it allows me to monitor fluctuations and transient events (such as incoming phone calls) as well as constant sources of EMF radiation.

When I select standard magnetic, the display will show the detected frequency strength in Milligauss. The digital field measurement is displayed in large print towards the bottom of the screen (for example, the large .2 mG). The field percentage is shown directly above the digital field measurement.

The display also shows the peak measurement. At the top of the screen, I see the word “Peak” with .5 next to it — this indicates that the peak measurement recorded at that time was .5 mG. The peak number represents the highest reading over the last five seconds. The peak display percentage is also shown above the field percentage.

The battery icon opposite the peak indicator displays the remaining battery life in my 9-volt battery. TriField estimates that the TF2 has a battery life of approximately 20 hours, and there is a low-battery indicator that pops up as it nears the end of its life.

The other measurement options on the TF2 display information similarly. The primary difference is that for electric fields, the measurement is shown in volts per meter. RF measurements are displayed in milliwatts per meter squared. The peak percentage and field percentage functions work in the same way for all measurement types. The larger bar indicates the field percentage, while the smaller dotted bar at the top shows the peak percentage.

However, the extended PDF manual breaks it down very clearly. Weighted mode can be a valuable measurement for those concerned with the health effects of EMF radiation exposure. When in weighted mode, the device gives more weight to frequencies between 60 Hz and 500 Hz, which the human body is more sensitive to, and the meter’s reading is adjusted to reflect the effect it is having on living tissue.

In general, standard electric, magnetic, and RF measurements will provide accurate readings of the strength of frequencies present. However, it may be a good idea to take two measurements when looking at electric and magnetic fields: one in standard mode and one in weighted.
